Dear Hazelnut Growers and Consultants,

The Microthiol SLN (Special Local Need Label) was just renewed by Oregon Department of Agriculture. There are now three wettable sulfur products that you can use for big bud mite control in hazelnuts under SLN labels listed below. The labels have been extended through 2024. Our research trials have demonstrated good control of bud mite for these products when applications are timed to roughly 50% emergence of mites from blasted buds. Examining the exterior of blasted buds for staging bud mites (under magnification) and comparing the number on the outside of the bud to the number in the interior of the bud can give you a rough estimate for timing if you aren’t using double-sided tape wrapped on stems below blasted buds to monitor movement on a weekly basis (labor-intensive). The bud mites must be outside the bud to encounter residue for the application to work.

Registered products (NOTE: these SLNs apply to use in OREGON Only):

  1. SLN: OR-180015 Microthiol Disperss, UPI
  2. SLN: OR-190005 Sulphur W.G., Quimetal Industrial S.A.
  3. SLN: OR-180007 Kumulus DF, BASF Corp.

The physical labels can be downloaded here:
